HARGRAY UPGRADING FAN AND MEDIA EXPERIENCE AT RBC HERITAGE WITH FIBER NETWORK

Investment continues Hargray’s support of the event since it began in 1969

Hilton Head Island, S.C. — April 10, 2017 – The RBC Heritage has a long reputation of providing a stellar fan experience. Last year, an estimated 130,000 people attended the six-day event, which pumps $96 million into the South Carolina economy. With fans and media now using smartphones and Wi-Fi-connected devices to share the event with the world, the communications network for the event is becoming increasingly important. Hargray Communications is again providing that network.

“At the Heritage this year, we are providing Wi-Fi connectivity over our gigabit fiber network with the latest generation of Wi-Fi equipment,” said Glen Keaton, senior network engineer for Hargray. “This is going to be impressive.”

The RBC Heritage encourages members of #PlaidNation to share their experiences at the event on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. To accommodate, Hargray has installed access points to provide a consistent, reliable connection at the 18th green and Skybox area to meet customer demands.

In the past year as part of the Lowcountry Broadband Plan on Hilton Head Island, Hargray doubled its average annual investment to nearly $60 million, installing over 100 miles of fiber — enough to circle the island ten times. That infrastructure is the backbone for STELLAR, a high-speed Internet experience by Hargray that makes the upgrades at the Heritage possible.

“Hargray has always been a great partner and kept the tournament on the cutting edge of technology,” Tournament Director Steve Wilmot said. “Technology changes at a rapid pace and it is important for us to have the tools our fans and media from all over the globe need to share the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing with the world.”

The other beneficiary of the new network will be the 200 to 250 media members that swarm to the event each year. From local press to national outlets like Golf Network and CBS, media members will have the connectivity to report from the course and use social media tools to connect with their audiences.

Hargray Communications is the official communications provider for the RBC Heritage and this is its 48th year of partnering with the event. This is the 31st year that Hargray has a Skybox on the 18th green, annually one of the most popular spots at the Heritage.

The RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links starts Monday, April 10 and continues through Sunday, April 16.
