Television Support and Education - Billing

What is the Broadcast TV Surcharge on my bill?

In 2012, the local broadcast channels in our community — ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC — elected to significantly increase programming fees to Hargray. These networks are seeking the fees under a federal law commonly known as “Retransmission Consent.” Broadcast networks enjoy the benefit of distributing their signal free over the air utilizing spectrum made available by the federal government, so taxpayers are subsidizing the distribution of broadcast TV signals. Hargray, along with many cable operators, believes it is not fair for the broadcasters to both benefit from federal airwaves subsidies AND demand fees from cable company subscribers. For this reason, we have added a line item on your bill titled “Broadcast TV Surcharge.” We pledge to you that we will not profit from this surcharge; these fees are simply a “pass through.” In addition, we pledge to continue our efforts to persuade lawmakers and regulators in Washington, D.C., to change the current law — and if we are successful, we will immediately remove this surcharge from all bills.
